TROWBRIDGE SECTION CHALLENGE- 28 September 2003 |
The Trowbridge Snooker Centre played host to this new seasons first Section Team Challenge event. There were 12 teams entered with a only 7 out of the 11 Cuestars Saturday Morning Sections represented. The Bournemouth, Eastleigh, Reading and Poole Section were unable to send teams on this occasion but hopefully they will become involved soon. The match of Round 1 was the contest between last seasons runaway Champions Trowbridge A and Aldershot. An unchanged Trowbridge A team of Matthew Hazell, Ian Meaker, Andrew Mayell and David Carroll comfortably came through their first match of the new season 5-1. In the quarter finals Trowbridge achieved another comprehensive 5-1 victory over Stubbington A. Swindon's Jesters A team saw off Trowbridge B 5-1. Jesters C defeated Jesters B 4-2 and Trowbridge's C Team lost 1-5 to Basingstoke. In the semifinals Jesters A of Steven Roberts, Steve Dunn, Phillip Ratcliffe and Lee Evans lost disappointingly 0-4 to Trowbridge A. I am sure the next contest between these teams will be much closer fought. Jesters C of Dean Hollick, Ryan Harron, Chris Evans and Craig Hollick ended Basingstoke A's fine run by 4 frames to 2. In the final Trowbridge A completed ended Jesters C's hope of a first Team Challenge title. From Trowbridge's first showing this season it would appear that they still hold a big advantage over the other teams in this competition. The Plate competition trophies were collected by Matthew Webb, Jamie Moutrey, Steven Spillett and Rory McCallum of the Gosport's Stoke Section team. This following their fine win over Jesters B by 4frames to 2. Our thanks to the staff of the Trowbridge Snooker Centre for providing warm and friendly hospitality on the day. Report: John Hunter |
SALISBURY OPEN - 5 October 2003 |
Sunday 5th October 2003 saw the start of the new Cuestars season with the Salisbury Open. In total 79 players took part in the main event. All matches played including 16 prelims were played the best of 5 frames. Although there were 16 prelim matches all eyes were on Ian Meaker from Trowbridge and our very own Paul Rose from Jesters and one of our organisers. Paul unfortunately lost by 3 frames to 0 but it is good to see Paul playing again rather than being sat behind the organisers' table. Also in the prelims Sean Harvey beat Andy Savage by 3 frames to 0 and in the first frame Sean hit a break of 101. In the first round there were many matches of note but Drew Farminer beat Neil Clayton by 3 frames to 2, Grant Conquest beat Lee Whiteley by 3 frames to 2, Paul Robertson beat Michael Finn by 3 frames to 2, under 21 players Daniel Hildyard beat Ben Harrison by 3 frames to 2, Alex Spencer beat Richard Reynolds by 3 frames to 2 and Stephen Kerr beat Phillip Norman by 3 frames to 2. In the second round Drew Farminer again became the player to watch as he beat Sean Harvey by 3 frames to 0 on the match table. In other matches Phillip Wildman beat Mark McLean by 3 frames to 1, Steven Roberts beat Ian Kemp by 3 frames to 2, Justin Fanning beat Nigel Mok by 3 frames to 1 and Nick Birney beat Pascal Richard by 3 frames to 1. One other match to be noted was the performance of Trowbridge youngster Bradley Brown who played against Grant Conquest. Grant who plays off of scratch had to give 60 points each frame to Brad and who eventually won by 3 frames to 2 was very complementary of Brad who kept trying despite Grant scoring in 40s or 50s every time he came to the table. Well done to Brad. Due to the numbers of players round three became 'a money' round with £8, their entry fee, being paid to the losers of each match. Drew Farminer, Eastleigh, again won by 3 frames to 0 beating Phil Wildman from Reading. Ben Billett, Bournemouth beat Mike Harris, London, by 3 frames to 0. Daniel Hildyard from Chandlersford beat Daniel Martin, from Woking by 3 frames to 2. Steve Roberts from Jesters in Swindon beat Karl Whiteley from Greenbaize Bournemouth by 3 frames to 2. Alex Dunkley, Chandlersford, beat James Collingwood, Salisbury by 3 frames to 0. John Graham from Swindons' 147 Club beat Justin Fanning, Weymouth, by 3 frames to 1. Stephen Kerr from Woking beat Grant Conquest, Witney, by 3 frames to 0 and Nick Birney from High Wycombe beat David Carroll from Trowbridge by 3 frames to 0. In the quarterfinals Ben Billett stopped the Drew Farminer charge by winning the match by 3 frames to 2. Steve Roberts beat Daniel Hildyard by 3 frames to 2, John Graham beat Alex Dunkley by 3 frames to 0 and Nick Birney beat Stephen Kerr by 3 frames to 0. All losing quarterfinalists won £15 each. In the semifinals Steve Roberts beat Ben Billett in a 3 frames to 2 nail bitter match and John Graham beat Nick Birney also by 3 frames to 2. Both losing semi finalists collected £45 each. In the all Swindon final John Graham beat Steve Roberts by 3 frames to 1. Steve Roberts as runner up collected £74, and John £166 for a days work on the snooker table. Congratulations go to both players for reaching the final after such a long day. In the plate event, which was played over the best of 3 frames, the first semifinal was between Paul Quinnell from Woking and Andy Simons-Rowe from Plymouth. Paul won by 2 frames to 0. In the second semifinal Lee Whiteley from Bournemouth beat Jack Morgan from High Wycombe by 2 frames to 1. Both Jack and Andy collected £8. In the plate final Lee Whiteley beat Paul Quinnell by 2 frames to 1. Paul collected £18 as the plate runner up and Lee £35 as the plate winner. In this event Sean Harvey as already stated hit a fantastic break of 101, other high breaks were Phil Wildman 77, Shaun Mercer 55 and Andy Mayell 45. All players who participated in this event won ranking points towards the Cuestars rankings, which at the end of the Cuestars season will be worth £500 to the winner of the Rankings Challenge. In total Cuestars will pay out £1,000 in prize money in the Rankings Challenge over the top 20 placings. Our thanks go to Joe and his staff at Salisbury Snooker Club for their hospitality on the day and we look forward to our next event at Jesters Snooker Club, Swindon on Sunday 12th October 2003. This is a Masters Event where double Ranking points are available. The prize fund of £560 with £200 to the winner is guaranteed. Report: Dave Norman |
SWINDON MASTERS- 12 October 2003 |
Sunday 12th October 2003 saw this Seasons first Cuestars Masters competition take place. For the 2003/2004 Cuestar Season the Masters competitions will be held on the 2nd Sunday of the month from October to May. The 2nd Sunday of the month was chosen so that Cuestars junior players were able to compete in the Golden Waistcoat tours and still enter our Masters competitions. Regrettable it would appear that the Golden Waistcoat Tour has now been moved to the 2nd Sunday of the month due to the introduction of the EASB U19 Tour. Once again Cuestars efforts to compliment the scratch events provided by other snooker organizations have been messed up by their last minute actions and for this reason our best junior players could not attend this Swindon Masters event! With about a dozen regular players missing the event still attracted an entry of 60 players. In the first round, the matches of note were Swindon's Neil Craycraft's nail biting win over Gosport's Pascal Richard by 3 frames to 2. Current Cuestars Champion Sean Harvey saw his season get into gear with a very fine 3-1 win over Ryan Mears (Aldershot). Junior Sponsored player Stewart Crosswell (Eastleigh) achieved a fine 3-0 win over Matthew Stadius. In the second round brothers Lee and Jason Whiteley met with Jason enjoying a 3-1 win. Young Jake Baker (Bournemouth's sponsored player) although defeated by scratch player Neil Craycraft did very well to take the match to a deciding frame. Woking's Paul Quinnel achieved a fine 3-0 win over top Cuestars player Neil Clayton. The most notable win of this round however belonged to Bournemouth sponsored section player James Mather who defeated WSA Challenge player David Donovan 3-1. The last 16 round saw young Anthony Ferriggi, who enjoyed notable success in last seasons Junior Ranking Series competitions, find top form. Anthony defeated Sean Armstrong 3-0. Ian Surtees bt Jason Whiteley 3-1, Neil Craycraft overcame Paul Quinnell 3-1. In the bottom half of the last 16 draw, Gavin Rogers bt Grant Conquest 3-0, Ben Billett ended James Mather's hopes 3-1 and Salisbury Open winner John Graham found Sean Harvey to strong and lost 3-0. Karl Whiteley edged out Swindon's Steven Roberts 3-2 and Ed Cooper showed his class to defeat Stewart Crosswell 3-0. In the quarterfinals Anthony Ferriggi bt Ian Surtees 3-1, Gavin Rogers bt Neil Craycraft 3-2, Sean Harvey ended another good run by Ben Billett 3-0 and Karl Whiteley achieved the best win of the day by beating Ed Cooper 3-0. All losing quarterfinalists won £20 each. In the semifinals Gavin Rogers bt Anthony Ferriggi and Sean Harvey bt Karl Whiteley. Both losing semi finalists collected £50 each. In the final between Bournemouth's Gavin Rogers and Woking's Sean Harvey it was Sean who lasted the course running out a 3-1 winner. Gavin as runner up collected £100, and Sean collected £200 for his days work on the snooker table. Congratulations go to both players for playing such entertaining snooker on the day! In the plate event, which was played over the best of 3 frames, the first semifinal was between Wayne Muddiman and Swindon's Andy Savage. Wayen won by 2 frames to 0. In the second semifinal Nick Birney (High Wycombe) beat Drew Farminer by 2 frames to 1. In the plate final Wayne bt Nick by 2 frames to nil. Nick collected £20 as the plate runner up and Wayne £40 as the plate winner. In this event the highest recorded break was a 77 made by Ed Cooper. However the highest break made combined with handicap a 105 (H.Break 75 + 30 H/cap) was made by Phillip Wildman. All players who participated in this event won double ranking points towards the Cuestars rankings, which at the end of the Cuestars season will be worth £500 to the winner of the Rankings Challenge. In total Cuestars will pay out £1,000 in prize money in the Rankings Challenge over the top 20 placings. Our thanks go to Steve and his staff at Swindon's Jesters Snooker Club for their hospitality on the day and we look forward to our next event at Basingstoke's Academy Snooker Centre on Sunday 26th October 2003. This is a Open Event where norman Ranking points are available. The entry fee is £8 and the prize fund is subject to the number of entries received. |

SALISBURY MASTERS- 14 December 2003 |
On Sunday 14 December 2003 the first Masters event to be held at the Salisbury Snooker Club took place. A tremendous entry on 71 players took part with the competition organiser Trevor Cross facing a long challenging day ahead! In response to players concerns regarding the quality of the cue balls used, with the blessing of the club, 10 new snooker balls were introduced and it would appear from the high level of snooker played throughout the day that this has gone some way to improving playing conditions. There was drama early on with Woking's Daniel Martin making a brilliant break of 84 setting a target of 119 for the highest break prize of £20.00. Unfortunately for Daniel his joy of making this break was short lived when it was established that he had also recently made a break of 98. Daniel's failure to notify Cuestars meant he had to be withdrawn from the competition. In fairness to Daniel when he realised his mistake his disappointment was certainly genuine and Cuestars has acknowledged this by decided that the punishment of losing his entry fee and being withdrawn from the competition was sufficient. Daniel has been informed that he will be able to enter future Cuestars events off his new handicap. "I would again like to remind all players of the neccessity to inform Cuestars of any change in highest break. Every player should be aware the Handicap System now used does ensure that players who consistantly perform to a higher standard than their handicap will have their handicap reduced. For those players who regularly enter competitions and find their handicap is insuficient to give them a chance then they can make a written request for their handicap to be reviewed! After this competition Steve Ashton made such a request and due to Steve's low rating score his handicap was increased from 25 to 40 this based on the highest break he has made in the last 12 months." Back to the competition the last 16 results of the main competition were as follows: - Last 16 Quarter Finals Semi Finals Final Well done Anthony for a successful return to Cuestars competition and congratualtions to Paul Fuller for his best Cuestars performance! The results from the semis of the plate competition were as follows: - Plate Semi Finals Plate Final Well done Daniel for a great win over last season's outstanding Cuestars Champion, Sean Harvey! In this event competition winner Anthony Cutler's break of 101 that when added to his handicap of 15 earned him the highest break prize of £20.00. The competions other century break maker was Sean Harvey with a 102. Our thanks go to the staff and owners of the Salisbury Snooker Club for their hospitality throughout the day.
