SALISBURY OPEN - 6 October 2002 |
|
The event attracted a high entry of 86 players
including a high number of Junior (Under 21) Players. This meant that

the best of 3 framed matches rather than the best of 5. In view of this
Cuestars increased the prize fund in the plate competition to £87. |
BASINGSTOKE SECTION TEAM CHALLENGE- 13 October 2002 |
|
The Altis Groups, Basingstoke Snooker Centre played host to Cuestars first Section Team Challenge event. 8 out of the 10 Cuestars Saturday Morning Sections were represented with 15 Four Player Teams taking part. The Cuestars Section at Swindon's Jesters Snooker Club had the most teams in the draw with 4 team entered. The match of Round 1 was the contest between arch rivals Gosport's Stoke A against Swindon's Jesters A. On this occasion it was Jesters who came through winners to progress to the next round. Stubbington A's first taste of team competition turned sour against the fancied and experienced Trowbridge team of Matthew Hazell, Ian Meaker, Andrew Mayell and David Carroll. The young Aldershot team had a good victory over the Reading B team. In the quarter finals Jesters B of Steve Dunn, Ryan Harron, Michael Richards and Liam Packer followed the example set by their A Team to record a fine win over Trowbridge. Basingstoke A found the Jesters A team to strong. In the bottom half of the draw Jesters C made it three Swindon teams in the semis by beating Basingstoke B. Aldershot took the last semifinal place after a fine win over Reading's A team. In the semifinals Jesters A of Philip Ratcliffe, Chris Evans, Lee Evans and Alex Lipski put out their fellow Jesters B team and Aldershot continued their brilliant form beating the Jesters C team. In the final Aldershot A of Ryan Mears, Dominic Birch, David Joce and Dale Mears (younger brother of Ryan) run out of steam losing to dominated Jesters A. Tophies were presented to all the players of these two fine teams. The Plate competition trophies were collected by George Marter, Mark Green, Jonathan Spark and Alex Millard of the Salisbury Section team. This following their fine win over Jesters D. Our thanks to the staff of the Basingstoke Snooker Centre for providing warm and friendly hospitality and to Deb of Deb diner who provided good food for all the teams and their families. |

The final saw Mark Joyce take full advantage of his 15 points start to defeat Paul Davies 3-1. Mark was rewarded with £200.00 and Paul went back to Cardiff £120.00 richer, this including £20 for the events top break of 132. Congratulations go to both players on their performance on the day. STUBBINGTON SECTION TEAM CHALLENGE- 27 October 2002 |
|
The Stubbington Snooker Club played hosts to the Seasons 2nd Section Team Challenge event. Unfortunately this event was over shadowed by gale force winds outside, which resulted in the Jesters teams understandably withdrawing from the competition on the Saturday following a weather warning for their region. The Basingstoke Teams were then unable to enter after deciding not to make the journey to Stubbington on the Sunday morning. In the end 9 teams did take part in the competition with the Eastleigh represented in the Section Team Challenge for the first. With 9 teams entered a prelim was required to set up the quarter-final matches. The prelim was contested between the Aldershot team, who were runners-up in the first Section Team Challenge event against the Stubbington A young team of Ian Hooper, Ross Barker, Joshua Ryman and Alex Caswell. Once again the draw had not favoured the inexperienced Stubbington side with Aldershot running out 4-2 winners. In the quarter finals Reading A including a 'green gilled' Shane Davies edged past Stubbington B 4-3, Eastleigh made a great start beating Gosport's Stoke A 5-1, Trowbridge saw off Stoke B 4-2 (Trowbridge Andrew Mayell 60 break) and finally Aldershot beat Salisbury 4-2. In the semifinals Reading A could not live with the impressive Eastleigh team of Stewart Crosswell, Simon Chung, Tom Layton and Simon Jiggins, Eastleigh won 5-1. The other semi saw Trowbridge beat Aldershot 4-3 with 'Cuestar player of the day' Andrew Mayell, defeat Aldershot's Ryan Mears in an exciting deciding frame. In the final Trowbridge (Matthew Hazell, Andrew Mayell, Ian Meaker and David Carroll) ended Eastleigh's fine run 6-0. Trophies were presented to all the players of these two fine teams. The Plate competition trophies were collected by Jason Thompson, Joe French, Joe Kemp and Matthew Webb of the Gosport's Stoke B team. This following their fine win over Stubbington B. Our thanks to the staff of the Stubbington Club who provided all the teams and their families with a warm and friendly hospitality. |
