MATT Wilson hailed the inaugural Cuestars South of England Championship Tour event as a “great success for myself, but more importantly for Cuestars”.
Speaking exclusively to Cuestars.uk.com, the High Wycombe star insisted the scratch format benefits both the south’s best amateurs and the younger players
Wilson emerged from a high-quality 44-strong field at Jesters SC, Swindon, with the £150 top prize after edging out Trowbridge’s Ben Harrison 2-1 in the final.
He said: “The last couple of years has seen a downturn in interest in senior events, and credit to John (Hunter) for re-igniting the interest in the tour by taking the big step of scratching the handicap system.
“I really enjoyed the round-robin format followed by knockout - it gives great reward to the top amateur players who have worked so hard over the years to improve and better themselves, whilst also giving the younger and lesser standard players more playing opportunities against the top players.”
“Most players will be impressed by the turnout, the format and the quality of the field. I’d imagine most events will get 40+ runners which will be great for Cuestars and all the players involved.”
